The Hidden Agenda of Sigrid Sugden – Now Available

The Hidden Agenda of Sigrid Sugden is now in print and available at your local independent bookstore (Woozles and Bookmark, in Halifax, Tattletales in Dartmouth), and at Amazon.ca. It can be ordered at Chapters.

I love the cover, and the design – and, as always, it’s such a thrill to have the real book in my hands!

I hope you’ll enjoy Sigrid’s adventures – and the continuation of Hud’s story from The Nine Lives of Travis Keating.

Word on the Street on September 22nd on the Halifax Waterfront was blessed with sunshine and good crowds.

I took part in a panel with Jan Coates (The Hare in the Elephant’s Ear and The Power of Harmony) and JoAnn Yhard (The Fossil Hunter of Sydney Mines, Lost on Brier Island, and Buried Secrets at Louisbourg) – and we had fun with discussing the role of empathy in books for kids and teens.

Does a reader feel empathy for the characters? Do you, when you read a book you really like?

Word on the Street – Halifax

wots_postersanssponsors_0Word on the Street is happening in Halifax this Sunday, September 22nd, on the Halifax Waterfront around the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

I’ll be there for 11:30 on the Vibrant Voices stage with Jan Coates and JoAnn Yhard.

We’re doing a panel discussion on middle grade and YA novels: can they foster empathy and critical thought in their readers?

Hope to see you there! It’s always a fun day, lots of wonderful writers reading, and happy to meet you.

Celebrating a New Novel for Teens!

On Monday October 17th, I went to the launch of Vicki Grant’s new YA novel, “Betsy Wickwire’s Dirty Secret”. What a wonderful gathering of friends, family, and fellow writers.

Vicki won the Red Maple Award last year for “Unsuitable for Family Viewing,” and at her launch mentioned Don Aker’s nomination for the White Pine Award 2012 for “The Fifth Rule,” and mine for the Red Maple, and welcomed writers Lisa Harrington and Jessica Scott-Kerrin. I was on a panel with Don Aker at Word on the Street last month, so it was a pleasure to see him again.

Great to see so many people out to celebrate a new novel for teens!

Word on the Street Update

Word on the Street was really fun. The weather cooperated beautifully, and the wharves at the waterfront were crowded with people out having a good time. A lot of ice cream!

James Leck (“The Adventures of Jack Lime”) was the moderator of our panel, and had thought up some great questions for Sheree Fitch, Don Aker and me.

Afterward, Don and I signed books at Woozles, and I attended First Book Canada’s booth – they’re huge advocates of literacy, check them out.

Then I attended Vicki Grant’s reading, from her new YA novel, “Betsy Wickwire’s Dirty Secret.” Be sure to check that out, too. Vicki’s a wonderful writer.

Don’t you love websites!

Come to Word on the Street on Sunday September 25th

Come to Word on the Street on Sunday September 25th, near the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic on Lower Water Street – tents will be set up on the wharf.

Sheree Fitch (“Pluto’s Ghost”), Don Aker (“The Fifth Rule”) and myself (“Home Truths”) will be on a panel called BAD BOYS – how can you resist that? We’ve all written about angry young men (mine the youngest, at 14!).

The panel is hosted by James Leck, and takes place on the Children and Young Adult Stage inside the Children’s Exhibitor Tent on the South Wharf. It goes from 1 -2 pm.

I’ll be doing book signings afterwards for Woozles, our wonderful independent bookstore for children, and at the First Book Canada booth, who are the also wonderful distributors of “Home Truths”.  I’d love to talk to you at either place!
