New Review for Sigrid

Fantastic review of The Hidden Agenda of Sigrid Sugden! It’s in the University of Manitoba’s CM Magazine, Volume XX Number 17, January 3, 2014.

The link is here:

The reviewer, Dr. Gregory Bryan, specializes in children’s literature in the Faculty of Education.

Of the three books that make up the trilogy, he says, “These are powerful, moving stories from the pen of one of Canada’s best writers.”

Now that’s the way to begin the New Year!

(The only glitch is, the review shows the original working cover of the book, which was replaced by a cover with a girl on the bicycle by the sea. I’ll have to see if the publishers can get that changed)

Either way, I’m so glad that Sigrid is making her way into the world.

Coming to Toronto!!

I’ve decided to attend the Pajama Press launch in Toronto – for all their titles (ten altogether) published in the spring and fall seasons of 2013. So I’ll be there on November 7th with Nix Minus One.

My flights are booked on Porter Air – I love flying into Toronto Islands airport and taking the ferry to the Harbourfront area.

And I can stay with my friend Sue MacLeod, who will also be at the launch with her wonderful present day/historical teen novel, Namesake.

The six-month “sabbatical” I’ve been trying to take from the world of kidlit?  With two new titles published this year – Nix Minus One and The Hidden Agenda of Sigrid Sugden  I’m out of luck!

Obviously, I really care about both books, and want to do everything I can to introduce them to potential readers. So…I’d better go prepare my presentation for the Pleasant View Branch of the Toronto Public Library on November 6th….

The Hidden Agenda of Sigrid Sugden – Now Available

The Hidden Agenda of Sigrid Sugden is now in print and available at your local independent bookstore (Woozles and Bookmark, in Halifax, Tattletales in Dartmouth), and at Amazon.ca. It can be ordered at Chapters.

I love the cover, and the design – and, as always, it’s such a thrill to have the real book in my hands!

I hope you’ll enjoy Sigrid’s adventures – and the continuation of Hud’s story from The Nine Lives of Travis Keating.

Word on the Street on September 22nd on the Halifax Waterfront was blessed with sunshine and good crowds.

I took part in a panel with Jan Coates (The Hare in the Elephant’s Ear and The Power of Harmony) and JoAnn Yhard (The Fossil Hunter of Sydney Mines, Lost on Brier Island, and Buried Secrets at Louisbourg) – and we had fun with discussing the role of empathy in books for kids and teens.

Does a reader feel empathy for the characters? Do you, when you read a book you really like?

Work In Progress

A busy week copy-editing The Hidden Agenda of Sigrid Sugden, to be published in the fall by Fitzhenry & Whiteside.

This is the final book of the three that started with The Nine Lives of Travis Keating back in 2008.

If you’ve read the second book, The Present Tense of Prinny Murphy, you may remember Sigrid as one of the Shrikes, the three girls who bullied Prinny. At the end of the book, Prinny is terrorized by Tate and Mel, and escapes in a dory in the fog. Later, she figures out Sigrid was the one who sent for help.

I always wondered what would happen to Sigrid when Tate and Mel found out she made the phone call that got them into big trouble…
