Award Season is Here

Great News!

Nix_C_PRINT_Nov13.inddNix Minus One is shortlisted for the 2014 Ann Connor Brimer Award for Children’s Literature.

This is my third nomination for this award, which covers the four Atlantic provinces (I’ve won it twice).  To be nominated for this award is a wonderful boost for a book.

My best wishes to the other two nominees, Meghan Marentette for The Stowaways and Jan Coates for The Power of Harmony.

Another Nomination!

Nix Minus One is included in the 2014 edition of Bank Street College of Education’s Best Books of the Year for Children and Young AdultsThe College is located in New York City.

Hidden Agenda of Sigrid Sugden Cover2A “Tree” Award for Sigrid!

Terrific news for The Hidden Agenda of Sigrid Sugden, which is one of ten nominees for The Hackmatack Children’s Choice Award 2015. This is the “Tree” award for the Atlantic provinces – the students pick the winner.

Happy reading to all the participating schools.

April and May on the Road

Travel plans are falling into place for April and May.

April 25-30 , I will be in Newfoundland, St. John’s, then CornerBrook, to visit libraries and schools because “The Nine Lives of Travis Keating” is nominated for the Hackmatack Children’s Choice Award.

On May 4, I’ll be reading at a library somewhere along Nova Scotia’s South Shore (I’m sure they’ll let me know where!), for the same reason.

May 10-13, I’ll be in Toronto, for the Silver Birch Children’s Choice Award – school visits and library readings, and I’ll attend the award ceremony at Harbourfront on May 13. Then I fly that evening to St. John NB, for the award ceremony for Hackmatack the next day, May 14. Then what’s left of me will drive home to Halifax!

A busy time – I’ll get to meet a lot of readers and other authors, and that’s always fun.

Hackmatack at Hawthorn

I was invited to be the author in attendance at Hawthorn School in Dartmouth NS for the delivery of the Hackmatack Children’s Choice Award titles, on September 14th at 9:30 a.m.

I was only just back from a trip out west, so I was a bit jet-lagged! It was a lovely event. The Education Minister, Marilyn More, was there and explained to the audience of students, teachers and guests why the NS Department of Education is investing over $200,000 this year for the Hackmatack program – clearly they’re in support of reading!
I attended Hawthorn School many years ago, for grade six, so it was fun to be back.
