Good news! The Hidden Agenda of Sigrid Sugden is one of ten books nominated for the 2015 Ontario Library Association’s Silver Birch Award for fiction.  This book was published by Fitzhenry & Whiteside.

Both The Nine Lives of Travis Keating and The Present Tense of Prinny Murphy were nominated for the same award.

And best wishes to fellow Nova Scotian writer Philip Roy for his nomination for Me and Mr. Bell.

New Reviews Are In!

CanLit for Little CanadiansHidden Agenda of Sigrid Sugden Cover2

“…The Hidden Agenda of Sigrid Sugden is simply about making things right. Jill MacLean has a similar agenda in her writing: show young readers that life can be difficult but nothing is ever final and there are ways to manage. Luckily her agenda is as benevolent as her writing is compassionate.”

Here’s the link to the whole review, hope you like it:

Marathon of Books Project Nix_C_PRINT_Nov13.indd

Amy Mathers’s “Marathon of Books” project involves reading a book a day and making her way across Canada as she goes, beginning in Newfoundland. She is raising money for a YA book award with the Canadian Children’s Book Centre. Check out this wonderfully worthwhile project at:

www.amysmarathonofbooks.ca

She has reviewed Nix Minus One (set in Newfoundland).

“For me, the beauty of this book begins with its title, Nix Minus One. What happens when you subtract one from nothing?…There are so many things I love about this book….this is my second time reading Nix Minus One, and I enjoyed it just as much as I did the first time.”

Thanks, Amy! And best of luck.

New Review for Sigrid

Fantastic review of The Hidden Agenda of Sigrid Sugden! It’s in the University of Manitoba’s CM Magazine, Volume XX Number 17, January 3, 2014.

The link is here:

The reviewer, Dr. Gregory Bryan, specializes in children’s literature in the Faculty of Education.

Of the three books that make up the trilogy, he says, “These are powerful, moving stories from the pen of one of Canada’s best writers.”

Now that’s the way to begin the New Year!

(The only glitch is, the review shows the original working cover of the book, which was replaced by a cover with a girl on the bicycle by the sea. I’ll have to see if the publishers can get that changed)

Either way, I’m so glad that Sigrid is making her way into the world.

Book Launch in Halifax

100_4875My friend Meghan Marentette and I had a joint launch at the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia of her first children’s novel, The Stowaways (Pajama Press) and of my fifth novel, The Hidden Agenda of Sigrid Sugden (Fitzhenry & Whiteside).100_4873Halifax-20131117-00155

A terrific event – a sandwich board outside the door, children sitting on a rug near the podium, delicious nibblies prepared by us (yes, I’m boasting!). Lisa Doucet was there from Woozles,

selling books. My great-grandson Logan was in the front row (his first book launch) with his mother Jessica, my granddaughter, to whom my book is dedicated.

Carmen Klassen of CBC Radio did a wonderful job of introducing Meghan and me, thank you, Carmen.

And many friends came to help us celebrate as our two new books make their way into the world. Thanks to everyone who made this event so successful.
