Writing at the Writer’s Retreat

At our annual writers’ retreat in central New Brunswick, I worked on book
#4. I’m trying my hand at a free verse Young Adult novel…we’ll see how it goes!

Over two feet of clean fluffy snow there. We snowshoed, sledded, walked the
dog, ate too much and laughed a lot. And we did – truly we did – actually
write.

An award for Prinny

More exciting news when I returned from our annual writers’ retreat in New Brunswick: “The Present Tense of Prinny Murphy” has been selected for the Top Shelf Fiction for Middle School Readers 2010 list.

This list is published in VOYA (Voice of Youth Advocates), a US magazine specializing in YA library services.

4 Star Review for Home Truths

Children’s  Magazine, out of the University of Manitoba, has given “Home Truths” a four-star review!
“…a heart-warming coming-of-age novel…a novel of suspense and tension…vivid and empathetic descriptions…”

2011 USBBY Outstanding International Books Honor List

Today I found out that “The Present Tense of Prinny Murphy” is on the 2011 USBBY Outstanding International Books Honor List, for grades 6-8.

USBBY is the United States Board on Books for Young People; it’s the US national section of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY).

To be on this list, the book has to have been published in a country other than the US, but distributed or published at a later date in the US.

I’m delighted to be on this list in the company of books that originated not just in Canada, but in the UK, New Zealand, Australia, and the Netherlands.

My Holiday Book Reading

Five more books I enjoyed reading over the holidays, all for older teens:

“The Realm of Possibility” and “Love is the Higher Law” (post 9/11), both by David Levithan.

“Cold Skin,” “The Wolf,” and “A Place Like This,” by the Australian writer, Steven Herrick.

Now that I’m about to start writing my fourth book, I have to stop reading novels – non-fiction only! For me, it’s one of the penalties of being a writer….
