More Updates on the Book Writing

The proofs arrived on July 17th. This is the final version of the book as it will be sent to
the printer, all the pages laid out as they will appear in the actual book. So my task was
to read it very carefully for errors, and to make as few as possible editorial changes. I
emailed the final version today, just in time to catch the ferry to Newfoundland tomorrow
for my granddaughter’s wedding in Port aux Basques.
Oh. Fourteen more emails in that ten days. Scarcely worth counting!

The wedding was really fun, a Newfoundland party with lots of laughter and the
occasional tear or two. Afterward we spent a few days north of Gros Morne, where we
hiked, watched birds doing stopovers on their long migration from the high Arctic, and
ate lots of fish.

Editing a Book

I counted up the number of emails about Home Truths from my editor to me between the end of January and the 6th of July – a grand total of 101. A lot of revising, in other words!

New Book off to the Editor

I emailed the revised manuscript to my editor late Monday night, the 5th. Today I walked, gardened, took a book to Starbucks and read, and generally didn’t do much of anything. But I’m already starting to wonder what my editor will think about the changes I’ve made…

Latest book in the works – Home Truths

I’ve been working and reworking the manuscript for my third book – both on my own and with the great help of my editor. This process, called editing,  and unfortunately a major part of writing, took up a lot of time from January onwards.

Home Truths, juvenile fiction bookThe book, for readers in Grade 7 and perhaps grade 8, is called “Home
Truths.” It’s set on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia, and follows a summer
in the life of fourteen year old Brick MacAvoy. The little girl on the cover
is his four year old sister Cassie. His father, Floyd, and his mother, Opal, are – well, one way to put it is that they’re difficult. Tully Langille, the girl down the road, has no use for Brick, who is known as a bully. Brick takes up karate, a discipline he both uses and misuses; the showdown with his father builds inevitably through the hot days of August.
“Home Truths” will be published in the fall of 2010 by Dancing Cat Books, an
imprint of Cormorant Books.
