A Nomination for Prinny

“The Present Tense of Prinny Murphy” is one of five books nominated for the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children’s Book Award – and I’m the only author who isn’t from Ontario.

I’m really happy to find Prinny on the shortlist!

Prinny wins Ann Conner Brimer Award

Atlantic Book AwardsThe Atlantic Book Award ceremony was held in the evening, at Alderney Gate
Library Theatre
, with a packed house.

It was an exciting evening, as “The Present Tense of Prinny Murphy” won the Ann Connor Brimer Award for the best
children’s book published in 2009 in the four Atlantic provinces.  Because “Nine Lives” won this award last year, I really hadn’t expected to win.

Stunned? Happy? Overwhelmed? Grateful? All of the above!
And a big vote for Ann Brimer’s family for this award, which encourages children’s writers throughout NS, NB, PEI and NL.

School Visit Bedford South, Nova Scotia

At Bedford South School today, I spent time with two grade four classes, for Writers in the Schools.

I had a grand time. I read to them, and we did some writing exercises, had a question and answer session, and then I read some more. I love being with kids who are right into the book (“Nine Lives” in
this case).

I rediscover, each time, that this is why I write.

School visit to Tantallon, Nova Scotia

Today I visited Tantallon Elementary School, and had two sessions, one with
two grade six classes, the other with two grade fives. This visit was in
connection with my nomination for the Ann Connor Brimer Award.
The son of the librarian at the school is on the same hockey team as my grandson,
Stuart – for whom I wrote “The Nine Lives of Travis Keating” – so I felt
right at home!
It was my first time to do a school presentation for “The
Present Tense of Prinny Murphy,” so that was fun.
