Fundraiser with SPCA

Later in December, I’ll be going to an SPCA fundraiser called the Tree of Lights at the Halifax Shopping Centre, and Sunnyside Mall in Bedford – where I’ll be selling (I hope!) copies of The Nine Lives of Travis Keating to the public. The SPCA receives a percentage of the proceeds, to help their work in rescuing  animals in need.

Sunnyside Mall on the 18th of December.

Halifax Shopping Centre on December 13th and 19th.

See you there!

More reviews

Both Booklist and Atlantic Books Today gave “The Nine Lives of Travis Keating” a good review.

“…Travis is an engaging, dimensional character…readers will recognize many of their own feelings and conflicts in Travis’ story.”  Booklist Online

“…captures a true sense of the place and its people…beautifully depicts the wide range of emotions that often threaten to overcome Travis…Travis emerges as a very believable character…”   Atlantic Books Today, Holiday 2008.

CBC Interview

On Wednesday November 12, Stephanie Domet of CBC’s Mainstreet (Radio One) interviewed me about “The Nine Lives of Travis Keating.”

We talked about the writing process, the Newfoundland setting and the sequel. At the end of the interview, CBC gave away five books – apparently the phones were ringing off the wall! So I hope the five winners really enjoy the book; and thanks to Stephanie for a great interview.

Book Launch

The book launch for The Nine Lives of Travis Keating took place on November 6th at the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia – a neat space down by Pier 21 in Halifax. Trudy Carey was the host; she’s the manager of Woozles, Halifax’s independent children’s bookstore.

I invited a whole lot of people and – wonderful! – a whole lot of people came. Somewhere between  65 and 70 people, to be exact, including 9 kids. I’d really wanted some kids to be there – after all, it’s a kids’ book!

Books were available for people to buy – and every book that Trudy had brought with her sold.

I read short sections from the first three chapters. If you’ve started the book, you know that in Chapter Three I had to howl like a ghost from Gulley Cove. I’d practised the actual reading at home – but I was afraid if I practised howling in my apartment, men in white coats would come and take me away. So driving alone to the airport one day, I was howling away to myself when a guy passed me, giving me kind of a weird look. Buddy, I thought, never in a thousand years would you guess why I’m doing this.

Reading from The Nine Lives of Travis Keating

Reading from The Nine Lives of Travis Keating

My grandson and his family came to the launch from Port aux Basques, Newfoundland – Stuart is the reason there’s a book, and therefore a launch. A poet friend from Manitoba who happened to be visiting in Halifax dropped by, friends from New Brunswick and many more friends and family from Nova Scotia were there – the whole occasion was truly celebratory. Which, I believe, is what a book launch should be.
